  • Age 4 to 6 - Must travel in the rear of the car using an appropriate booster seat or booster cushion.

  • Over 12 (or over 4ft 5 in) - Must travel in the front or rear of the car using an adult seat belt.
  • Exceptions - The child may travel in the rear of the car using an adult belt for a short journey in the case of an emergency, in a taxi if a child seat is not available or where two child seats prevent a third from being fitted.
  • Penalty - The penalty for failing to comply is a fixed £30 penalty fine or a fine of up to £500 if the parent is a persistent offender and the case goes to court.
