Carseat Safety
The highlights of the new child seat laws are as follows:
- Under 3 - Must travel in the rear of the car
using an appropriate child seat, booster seat or booster cushion.
- Age 4 to 6 - Must travel in the rear of the car
using an appropriate booster seat or booster cushion.
- Age 7 - 11 (and under 4ft 5 in) - Must travel in
the rear of the car using an appropriate booster seat.
- Over 12 (or over 4ft 5 in) - Must travel in the
front or rear of the car using an adult seat belt.
- Exceptions - The child may travel in the rear of
the car using an adult belt for a short journey in the case of an emergency, in
a taxi if a child seat is not available or where two child seats prevent a third
from being fitted.
- Penalty - The penalty for failing to comply is a
fixed £30 penalty fine or a fine of up to £500 if the parent is a persistent
offender and the case goes to court.
